The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore City, Maryland, collapsed on Tuesday, March 26, after a cargo ship collided with one of the landmark’s pillars.
According to Al Jazeera, the cars crossing the bridge plummeted into the Patapsco River, with at least six missing individuals presumed dead.
Citing a report by ABC News, Al Jazeera stated that the container ship “lost propulsion” while leaving port, and the crew informed Maryland officials that they had lost control of the vessel.
The international news outlet added that the ship's two pilots and 22 crew members “have been accounted for” with no reports of injuries.
Meanwhile, Lars Jensen, a container ship expert, told Al Jazeera that the bridge’s collapse would “create significant problems on the US East Coast for US importers and exporters.”
The Maryland governor has declared a state of emergency in the area with the Federal Aviation Administration stating that it is restricting aircraft from flying over the wreck of the bridge.
