The city government of Baguio declared a state of calamity in the province on Monday evening due to the effects of Super Typhoon Egay.

The declaration was enclosed in Resolution 494-2023 which was released to the media on Tuesday.

According to the Resolution, the declaration is based on an initial reported damages:

  • The PHP 18,403,943 sustained by the electric distribution utility Beneco, valued at PHP 5.39 million;
  • The cost of infrastructure damage estimated by the City Building and Architecture Office at PHP 4.38 million and the City Engineering at PHP 4.25 million;
  • Damage to school facilities and learning materials valued at PHP 3.17 million;
  • Damage to facilities and crops reported by the city Veterinary and Agriculture Office at PHP 1 million.

The declaration occurred several days after Abra, Apayao, Benguet, and Mountain Province were also placed under state of calamity due to Egay.

Furthermore, the resolution said that one of the conditions established by the NDRRMC for declaring a state of calamity is when at least 15% of the forecasted impacted population needs immediate assistance.

Even after Egay, the city continues to receive intermittent heavy rainfall, with monsoon showers saturating the soil in this mountain tourist city.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported on Tuesday that the current rains will continue until the weekend, increasing the risk to people.

The proclamation authorizes the city administration to use the rapid response fund (QRF) for rehabilitation and recovery services.
