A magnitude 5.3 quake rocked Jomalig, Quezon on Wednesday, September 4.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said that the earthquake, which has depth of four kilometers, hit Quezon province at 7:16AM
PHIVOLCS located the epicenter of the quake at 43 kilometers northeast of Jomalig.
State seismologists recorded the following intensities:
- Intensity V - Jomalig, and Polillo, Quezon
- Intensity IV - Burdeos, Panukulan, and Patnanungan, Quezon; Paracale, Santa Elena, and Vinzons, Camarines Norte
- Intensity III - Alabat, Calauag, General Nakar, Guinayangan, Infanta, Mauban, Real, and Tagkawayan, Quezon; Capalonga, Jose Panganiban, Mercedes, and San Lorenzo Ruiz, Camarines Norte; Taguig City; Pateros; Quezon City
- Intensity II - Atimonan, Gumaca, and Lopez, Quezon; Basud, Daet, Labo, San Vicente, and Talisay, Camarines Norte; Del Gallego, and Lupi, Camarines Sur; Angeles City
- Intensity I - Caloocan City; Pasig City
Instrumental Intensities:
- Intensity IV - Jose Panganiban, and Paracale, Camarines Norte

Less than an hour later, a magnitue 4.9 quake, with a depth of one kilometer, hit Jomalig
PHIVOLCS located the epicenter of the earthquake, which hit Quezon province at 7:55AM, at 42 kilometers northeast of Jomalig.
The agency recorded the following intensities for the second quake:
- Intensity IV - Polillo, Quezon
- Intensity III - Alabat, Burdeos, Calauag, General Nakar, Guinayangan, Infanta, Mauban, Panukulan, Real, and Tagkawayan, Quezon; Paracale, Santa Elena, and Vinzons, Camarines Norte; Makati City; Quezon City; Pateros
- Intensity II - Atimonan, Gumaca, and Lopez, Quezon; Basud, Capalonga, Daet, Jose Panganiban, Labo, Mercedes, San Lorenzo Ruiz, San Vicente, Talisay, and Vinzons, Camarines Norte; Del Gallego, and Lupi, Camarines Sur; Angeles City
- Intensity I - Caloocan City; Pasig City

PHIVOLCS called the event a 'doublet'.
"Though they seem similar, they are actually separate events, not one triggering the other. This happens where faults are quite complicated, causing the stress to trigger a sequence of events,” PHIVOLCS explained.
