The Manila local government unit (LGU) reported on Wednesday that the authorities collected a total of 158 truckloads of trash from the areas where the devotees converged during the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Tuesday, January 9.
According to Manila City’s Department of Public Service, the garbage collectors gathered around 468 metric tons of garbage from January 6 to 10, saying that the increase could be contributed to this year’s Traslacion, which started from the Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church with 6.1 million attendees.
Moreover, Manila City spokesperson Princess Abante reported that 46 garbage trucks from the Quirino Grandstand to the roads going to Quiapo Church had collected 128 metric tons of trash, higher record as compared to the previous records since the traditional observance of Traslacion was suspended due to COVID-19.
Last year, 99 truckloads of garbage were collected after the Black Nazarene feast, while 43 truckloads were gathered in 2022, and 57 truckloads and 88 truckloads in 2021 and 2020, respectively.
Based on the monitoring, food containers, polyethylene terephthalate bottles, and single-use plastic, among others, were collected at the parade grounds and areas near Quirino Grandstand.
