Businessman tycoon Charlie “Atong” Ang and actress Gretchen Barretto are now included in the ongoing investigation in the case of the ‘missing sabungeros’ or cockfighting enthusiasts, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla confirmed on Thursday, July 3.

In a report by RH Boy Gonzales, this was after the testimony made by Julie Patidongan, also known by the alias “Totoy.”

Patidongan accused the two of being behind the disappearance of over 100 individuals involved in ‘e-sabong’ or online cockfighting game.

Remulla also admitted that the probe is extremely challenging, citing the vast amount of money involved and the powerful connections allegedly linked to the crime.

“Mabigat lang talaga itong laban dito kasi nga sobrang daming pera at sobrang daming koneksyon,” said Remulla in an ambush interview.

“Sinasabi ko nga we are here holding the faith kasi ang tingin nga namin dito, isa lang naman ang kakampi namin dito ang taong bayan,” he added.

Earlier on Thursday, July 3, Ang filed multiple criminal complaints against Patidongan and another individual, Alan Bantiles, also known as alias “Brown,” accusing them of attempted robbery with violence and intimidation, grave threat, grave coercion, incriminating innocent persons, and slander.

Meanwhile, Ang again denied all allegations linking him and his associates, including former partner Barretto, to the controversial disappearance of cockfighting enthusiasts in 2021.

Ang has denied all allegations against him and defended his group, including Barretto, describing them as “clean and not criminals.”

"Dahil nga sa extortion tinatawagan nila ang isa't isa, ang hindi magbibigay 'yun ang sasabihin niyang pangalan. Originally, ang sinasabi niya parang 15, 16, 17 ngayon apat na lang kami," he stressed.

According to Ang, Patidongan demanded P300 million and allegedly plotted to have him kidnapped.

He also claimed that he had previously given Patidongan P12 million to support his unsuccessful mayoral bid in Barobo, Surigao del Sur.

In a separate statement, Patidongan alleged that Barretto was involved in disposing of the victims’ bodies in Taal Lake, allegedly with the help of rogue police officers—an accusation both Ang and Barretto have vehemently denied.

Moreover, Remulla stated that aside from Ang and Barretto, more than 20 individuals are currently being subjected to a case buildup in connection with the case.

As the DOJ continues to gather evidence and testimony, Remulla reiterated that no one will be spared from the law.
