Ateneo de Manila University has been recognized as the leading university in the Philippines, securing the 84th position in the 2023 Asia University Rankings conducted by Times Higher Education.
Outshining other institutions in the country, Ateneo emerged as the only Philippine university to make it into the coveted top 100, competing against 669 universities from 31 countries.
Tsinghua University and Peking University from China maintained their dominance by securing the first and second spots in the rankings for the fourth consecutive year.
The evaluation process for the rankings encompassed several performance indicators, including teaching, research, citations, industry income, and international outlook.
Ateneo garnered an impressive overall score of 47.4.
"We are honored to enter Times Higher Education's Asia rankings for the first time, especially being ranked in the top 100," Fr Roberto Yap SJ, president of Ateneo, said in a statement.
"This feat is the product of years of hard work of the entire community — from faculty and researchers to staff, professionals, and administrators, to our students... This only encourages us to further work on our shared mission to engage with society to affect positive change in the world," Yap added.
Ateneo also demonstrated prominence among Philippine universities in this year's Impact Rankings, achieving a commendable placement in the 201-300 range.
The Impact Rankings assessed participating institutions' commitment to promoting sustainable development goals.
Among other Philippine universities, UP maintained a position in the 201-600 range with an overall score ranging from 35.5 to 38.1.
UP had previously held the top spot among Philippine universities, ranking 129th in the 2022 Asia University Rankings.
DLSU claimed the third spot among Philippine universities, with a ranking in the 201-250 range, while Mapua University secured the fourth position in the country, placing in the 601+ range.
