The Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) reportedly nearly collided with a wooden resupply boat belonging to the Philippines at Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea aside from the water cannon incident,
According to LtJG Darwin Datwin, a crew member of the boat "Unaizah May 1," they were approached and twice nearly rammed by the CCG nd Chinese fishing ships on August 5.
Although they managed to avoid the larger ships, they were hit by China's water cannon.
"Nasa less than 5 yards 'yung distance ng CCG, kaya muntik nang matamaan 'yung [PCG boat]. Since nakira naman namin 'yung approach ng CCG, 'yung mga captains namin they opted na mag-maneuver, 'yung drastic na maneauver para hindi matamaan," Datwin recounted.
As a result of the incident, Lt. Ramsey Gutierrez of "Unaizah May 2" said the cargo of rice, vegetables, and meat meant for delivery to BRP Sierra Madre got wet.
He added that despite China's aggressive behavior, their team remained calm and unwavering in their resupply mission.
"Nabasa ''yung ilalim ng mga bigas, then 'yung iba tinamaan din ng water cannon na nasira," Gutierrez said.
Ultimately, only "Unaizah May 1" successfully avoided China's harassment, while "Unaizah May 2" was unable to deliver supplies to the soldiers aboard BRP Sierra Madre.
