To prevent a shortage and normalize prices, Antique farmers are encouraged to prioritize high-value crops (HVC) such as onion and garlic.
During the provincial council session on Monday, Board Member Rony Molina passed a resolution amid “wide disturbing news of overwhelming price increase in the market of two of the HVC, namely onion and garlic.”
Molina said that observing the past years, there is stability in the prices of mentioned crops until today when a shortage happened due to a lack of cold storage facilities caused by traders hoarding and taking advantage of the abnormal situation.
He added that it is better to plant HVC, which is a better cure than importation which leads to the farmers' disadvantage.
In an interview, Molina mentioned that the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the office of the Provincial Agriculturist must need to teach planting technology to farmers.
