The United Nations announced that Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie will no longer be part of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) as a special envoy but will still continue to be a humanitarian activist.

With more than 60 field assignments during her 21 years with UNHCR, Jolie said she wanted to continue working with refugees outside of the global body.

Filippo Grandi, the UN high commissioner for refugees thanked Jolie for her service, commitment, and the difference she has made for refugees and people forced to flee.

He expressed his appreciation to Jolie for her desire to shift her engagement and said he will support her decision.

Grandi added that he knows that the refugee cause will remain close to Jolie's heart and he is certain that the actress will bring the same passion and attention to a wider humanitarian portfolio.

The UNHCR estimated that more than 100 million people are currently displaced around the world and there have never been so many people forced from their homes by violence, conflict, and persecution.

Meanwhile, Jolie has been serving as a special envoy since 2012.
