Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra “Alex” Eala’s run at the 2026 ASB Classic came to an end after she fell to China’s Xinyu Wang in the women’s singles semifinal, 7-5, 5-7, 4-6, in Auckland, New Zealand.
Eala showcased her skill and resilience throughout a grueling two-hour match, exchanging points and displaying powerful serves and quick court movement, despite calling for a medical timeout early in the deciding third set.
However, Wang managed to edge her out in crucial moments of the final set, securing the victory.
Earlier in the tournament, Eala also bowed out of the doubles event. Partnering with American Iva Jovic, she fell to China’s Yifan Xu and Zhaoxuan Yang in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-3.
Eala and Jovic initially led 5-4 in the first set, but Xu and Yang rallied with three straight games to take the set. In the second set, Eala and Jovic jumped to a 3-1 lead, only for the Chinese duo to win five consecutive games and close out the match.
Despite these setbacks, Eala continues to demonstrate her ability to compete with top international players, gaining valuable experience ahead of the new season.
