“I'm the first trans woman to win this award!”

A roaring applause followed as Alex Consani was recognized as the first trans woman to be named Model of the Year at the British Fashion Council’s (BFC) 2024 Fashion Awards.

The American model and influencer made history on Monday evening (US time), at the Royal Albert Hall in London. During her speech, she recognized the models that came before her. She acknowledged the black trans women who fought for the space she is allowed to thrive in today—specifically, Dominique Jackson, Connie Fleming, Aaron Rose Phillips, and countless more.

She also thanked her parents for their support and urged other parents of trans children to support their kids as well. Consani highlighted that apart from it being possible, change is needed.

“Now, more than ever, it’s an important conversation that should be had about how to truly support and uplift one another within this industry, especially those who have been made to feel insignificant,” she said during her speech.

Apart from her distinct bleached hair and eyebrows, the model strutted the event wearing a corseted dress with a Union Jack draping, designed by Turkish-British designer Dilara Findikoglu.

The BFC’s Model of the Year award is given to models who have dominated the industry for the last 12 months. It considers their influence on the runway, including their contributions to the industry.

The 21-year-old has been making waves in the fashion industry, modeling for prestigious brands like Chanel, Stella McCartney, and Marc Jacobs. In October, Consani walked alongside Valentina Sampaio at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show red carpet; making them the first two trans women to grace the acclaimed fashion show’s red carpet.

She has always been vocal about the lack of representation in the fashion industry and strives to have a wider reach in her audience. She rose to fame through TikTok, garnering over four million followers.

She began her modeling career at age 12 and earned the title of the world’s youngest transgender model.
