The province of Albay has declared a state of calamity in response to the unrest of the Mayon volcano, as confirmed by the provincial Public Information Office (PIO) on Friday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the volcano's alert level to 3 on Thursday due to an increase in rockfall activities.
"The Province of Albay is now placed under a STATE OF CALAMITY pursuant to Resolution No. 0607-2023 of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Albay, following the notice issued yesterday by PHIVOLCS raising the status of Mayon volcano to Alert Level 3," the local PIO announced.
Phivolcs previously warned that there is a possibility of "potential explosive activity occurring within days or weeks" in Mayon volcano.
