Residents affected by the Mayon Volcano in Albay received over P9 million in assistance from the Office of the Civil Defense on Tuesday, June 13.
A total of P9.2 million worth of tarpaulin rolls, N95 masks, family food packs, hygiene kits, pelican cases, and a portable water filtration unit were donated by the OCD to the affected residents.
According to OCD administrator Ariel Nepomuceno, their office will continue to give necessary support from the national government to the affected local government units, adding that the OCD will continue its cooperation with the regional office as they monitor the situation.
Moreover, OCD spokesperson Raffy Alejandro IV previously stated that the agency had earmarked P250 million in funds and P108 million worth of commodities for the more than 14,000 evacuees who are now staying in evacuation centers, as reported by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Based on the observations in previous years, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said that the unrest in the Mayon Volcano could last for 90 days, as it classified the volcano under Alert Level 3 last Thursday due to its "potential explosive activity happening within days or weeks."
According to the metrics of the state seismologists, the danger zone could only be expanded up to eight kilometers from the active crater under alert level 3.
Albay Governor Edcel Greco Lagman has already expanded the volcano's "danger zone" to a seven-kilometer radius.
Phivolcs explained that the Mayon Volcano underwent one volcanic earthquake on Tuesday, expelling 723 metric tons of sulfur dioxide.
