Authorities from Department of Tourism (DOT) in Bicol are anticipating a possible increase in tourist arrivals in Albay following the raising of Alert Level 3 at Mayon Volcano, despite heightened volcanic activity and precautionary measures in nearby communities, as reported by RH Ruel Saldico.

According to Regional Director of the DOT in Bicol Herbie Aguas, while certain sectors may be affected by the alert level escalation, the volcano’s activity also brings positive impacts to the tourism industry.

Aguas said tourists continue to flock to the province to witness the natural beauty and unique activity of Mayon Volcano, with strict safety protocols firmly in place to ensure public safety.

“For the bad side setyembre we will be evacuating those residents near the Mayon, pero ang good side naman nito sa tourism side pag pumuputok ‘yung Mayon maraming turista ang pumunta and the last eruption Albay gained 50,000 during the eruption. May mga bagay na we make something good out of situation,” Aguas said.

Authorities confirmed that there have been no reported casualties related to the current volcanic activity.

Meanwhile, a crater glow, locally known as “banaag,” was observed at the volcano’s summit on Tuesday night. Visible lava flow from the lava dome was also reported, accompanied by pyroclastic currents.

Despite the increased alert level, the Albay provincial government, led by Governor Noel Rosal, reassured both local and foreign tourists that it remains safe to visit the province, provided that advisories and safety guidelines are strictly followed.

Mayon Volcano remains under Alert Level 3, indicating increased chances of hazardous eruptions, prompting authorities to maintain heightened monitoring and preparedness measures.
