The Armed Forces of the Philippines - Western Command (WESCOM) on Thursday reported that swarming activities by the Chinese Fishing Vessels (CFVs) resurged in several locations within the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a press release, WESCOM said it observed 30 CFVs in Iroquois Reef, Sabina Shoal, and Baragatan Bank when it conducted aerial patrols last September 6 and 7.

"The increased presence of CFVs raises concerns regarding the potential implications for Philippines' maritime security, fisheries conservation, territorial integrity, and preservation of the marine environment," the AFP's unified command underscored.

"These activities have been a source of tension in the WPS and have contributed to instability in the region," it added.

Based on WESCOM's assessment, 23 CFVs were present in the Iroquois Reef which is within the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.

It also observed five CFVs in Sabina Shoal and two in Baragatan Bank (Nares).

According to WESCOM, massive coral harvesting and its harmful environmental impact were reported after the Philippine Navy spotted 33 CFVs in Rozul Reef and observed swarming activity in Sabina Shoal during its routine air patrol last August 24.

The AFP's unified command pointed out that the repeated swarming incidents in Iroquois Reef and Escoda Shoal are a "violation of Philippine sovereign rights and jurisdiction in its western border."

WESCOM said it is vital that the defense forces, law enforcement agencies, and international partners come together to uphold the country's sovereign rights and jurisdiction and maintain stability in the region.

"As the CN swarming activity resurges, the Philippines continues to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to safeguard its vital national interests and maintain stability in the region," it said.
