Troops from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and personnel from Police Regional Office 9 were involved in a deadly encounter with a kidnap-for-ransom group in Canacan, Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay.
The armed group is reportedly linked to the abduction of American vlogger Elliot Eastman on October 17.
According to a report by RH Edniel Parrosa, at least three suspects were killed in the clash, as confirmed by the First Infantry Division of the AFP. Among those killed were Mursid Ahod, identified as the 8th most wanted person in the province, along with brothers Abdul and Fahad Sahibad.
The three were suspected to be involved in kidnapping, extortion, theft, and the massacres of 2015 and 2016.
In a statement to DZRH News, Army Spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala confirmed that the group was believed to be behind Eastman's abduction.
Meanwhile, Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Ann K. Hofer commended the bravery of the 106th Infantry Battalion under the 102nd Infantry Brigade of the AFP, and the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) of the Zamboanga Sibugay Police Provincial Office.
"Our men and women in uniform have once again succeeded where lawlessness sought to prevail. They emerged from this operation unharmed, while the criminal elements were dealt a significant blow. Their bravery, dedication, and commitment to their duty are the reasons we can live our lives with peace and without fear. They risk their lives for us, and today we stand with gratitude and pride for their heroic actions," Governor Hofer stated.
The firefight between the two groups began yesterday morning and continued with assistance from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), who provided support in the operation.
As soldiers and policemen continued to pursue other members of the kidnap-for-ransom group who managed to flee, Naga Mayor Rino delos Reyes and Kabasalan Mayor Katrina Cainglit Balladares separately declared a suspension of classes on November 12 and November 13.
