A local official stated Tuesday that the Albay provincial government is prepared if the evacuation exceeds 90 days due to the ongoing instability at Mayon Volcano.

Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office officer-in-charge Eugene Escobar said that they are currently planning a 90-day evacuation, explaining that the longest evacuation period in their previous response to the Mayon uprising was five months.

Escobar also mentioned that they were able to sustain the long period of evacuation with the help of the national government and other international organizations that came in.

He believed that they would be getting the same commitment from the national government and other agencies, claiming that their office was prepared to sustain operations.

Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) Director Teresito Bacolcol said that the Mayon Volcano could continue rumbling for months, stating that they are seeing it following the template of the 2014 eruption, which was a quiet and effusive one.

Bacolcol added that the activity may persist for a few months, based on their previous experiences.

Mayon evicted tens of thousands of people five years ago after releasing millions of tons of ash, boulders, and lava.

Authorities in Albay have expanded the evacuation zone as lava began to flow from the crater of Mayon Volcano.

Residents inside the 7-kilometer enlarged danger zone have been told by the provincial authorities to prepare for probable evacuation.

The total number of evacuees has now reached over 14,000 people.
