As part of the Bureau of Corrections' (BuCor) plan to close the national prison in Muntinlupa City in 2028, at least 7,500 offenders, or roughly a quarter of the overall population are anticipated to be transported to other penal farms this year.
Inmates will be transferred from the NBP's minimal and medium security compounds to Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa, Palawan; Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte; and Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Panabo, Davao del Norte. According to BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr., each of the three prisons will accept 2,500 detainees from the NBP.
Meanwhile, other people detained in the NBP will be transferred in batches from 2024 to 2027 to other regional prisons that will be built in preparation for the NBP's closure in 2028.
