At least 60 percent of Filipinos are in favor of the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Card Registration law, according to the recent survey from Social Weather Station (SWS) released on Thursday, Nov. 3.
The SWS survey also found that only 17 percent disapproved of the new law while 23 percent were undecided.
The survey was conducted from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, one week before President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. signed the SIM Card Registration Act or Republic Act No. 11934.
There was a stronger approval among Filipinos who had read and heard about the bill prior to the survey at 73 percent than those who only learned about it during the interview at 55 percent.
The highest approval of the measure came from Balance Luzon and Metro Manila with 62 percent, followed by Mindanao at 59 percent, and Visayas at 56 percent.
The majority also believed that the law would help in combating crimes through mobile phones at 66 percent, 10 percent said otherwise, and 25 percent were undecided.
Meanwhile, 48 percent of Filipinos believed that authorized SIM Card sellers including shops and stalls could be entrusted with their personal information.
About 11 percent strongly disagreed, 20 percent disagreed, and 33 percent were undecided.
Most of those who said they believed that sellers could be trusted came from Balance Luzon at 51 percent, followed by Mindanao at 50 percent, Visayas at 44 percent, and National Capital Region (NCR) at 39 percent.
The survey was conducted using face-to-face interviews with 1,500 adults aged 18 years old and above.
