A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Hernani, Eastern Samar on Thursday afternoon, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

Based on PHIVOLCS’ earthquake bulletin, the earthquake, which has a 7-kilometer depth focus and is tectonic in origin, occurred east of Hernani, Eastern Samar at 2:50 PM.

PHIVOLCS downgraded the earthquake from the initial 6.1 magnitude.

Intensities were felt in the following areas:

  • Intensity V - Hernani and Llorente, EASTERN SAMAR
  • Intensity IV - Gen. MacArthur, Balangkayan, Maydolong, Salcedo and City of Borongan, EASTERN SAMAR
  • Intensity III - Quinapondan, San Julian, Sulat, Taft, Mercedes, Guiuan, Giporlos, Lawaan and Balangiga, EASTERN SAMAR; City of Tacloban, LEYTE
  • Intensity II - Can-avid, Dolores, Oras, San Policarpo; Palo, Tanauan, Dulag, Babatngon, San Miguel, Pastrana, Barugo, Carigara, Tabontabon and Julita, LEYTE; Basey and Santa Rita, SAMAR

Areas that experienced instrumental intensities are as follows:

  • Intensity II - Quinapondan, Can-Avid, EASTERN SAMAR; Villaba, Abuyog, Calubian, Carigara, and Leyte, LEYTE
  • Intensity I - Mahaplag, Javier, Hilongos, LEYTE; Rosario, NORTHERN SAMAR; Hinunangan, SOUTHERN LEYTE

In a separate bulletin issued the same day, PHIVOLCS said there is no tsunami threat in the country following the reported inital 6.1 magnitude.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” it said.
