A bomb blasted a gym in Mindanao State University (MSU) - Marawi City campus on Sunday morning, Dec. 3, which killed four individuals and wounded 45 others.
Based on the initial report from the Philippine National Police (PNP) as obtained by DZRH, the bombing occurred amidst a Catholic Student Mass in MSU's Dimaporo Gymnasium at around 7 AM.
“As of now, the PNP is still investigating if a grenade or Improvised Explosive Device exploded,” the report reads.
As of 11 AM, Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) Regional Director PBGen Allan Nobleza confirmed to RH Jun Dimacutac in a phone interview that four individuals died due to the explosion.
“There was an explosion in the morning, dito sa Dimaporo Gymnasium sa loob ng Mindanao State University dito sa Marawi. As a result, apat ang namatay at marami ang wounded,” Nobleza said.
Forty-five others reportedly sustained injuries and were rushed to the Amai Pakpak Medical Center.
The PNP and PRO-BAR have launched an investigation into the incident.
In a statement, MSU - Marawi unequivocally condemned in the strongest possible terms what they called "senseless and horrific act."
"Violence has no place in a civilized society, and it is particularly abhorrent in an institution of higher learning like MSU, a bulwark of peace, harmony, solidarity, reverence for life and humanity. This attack is an assault on our core values and our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive community for all," it stressed.
The university said all classes and academic activities are suspended "until further notice."
It said that additional security personnel have been deployed "to safeguard the campus."
