Three shores in Mindanao and four in Visayas have been positively affected by red tide or paralytic shellfish poison, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported on Friday, January 26.
In an advisory, BFAR said it is prohibiting the public from eating all types of shellfish in the following coastal areas in the Visayas and Mindanao regions that tested positive for red tide:
- Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur
- Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur and
- Coastal waters of San Benito in Surigao del Norte
- Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol
- Miracles in Masbate,
- San Pedro Bay in Samar
- Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar
Meanwhile, fish such as shrimp, squid, and crab can be eaten as long as they are washed well and the insides are removed.
"All types of shellfish and 𝑨𝒄𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒔 𝒔𝒑. or alamang gathered from the areas shown above are NOT SAFE for human consumption. Fish, squids, shrimps, and crabs are SAFE for human consumption provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking," the advisory read.
