Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla has revealed the possibility of multiple mass graves within the maximum security compound of New Bilibid Prison (NBP).
This disclosure came to light after the confirmation of the decapitated body of Michael Angelo Cataroja, a missing inmate, which was discovered inside a septic tank in the NBP's maximum security area.
As investigations continue, authorities are still searching for Cataroja's head in another septic tank at the prison where human bones have already been uncovered.
Remulla mentioned that there might be two more mass graves within the compound, specifically two additional septic tanks and another site that could yield more human remains.
“Ang tingin namin diyan, may dalawang mass graves pa kaming mahahanap sa loob ng maximum security compound: two septic tanks at may isa pang site kung saan magyi-yield pa ng ibang human remains,” said the Justice Secretary.
Remulla claimed that these events occurred prior to the tenure of Gregorio Catapang as the Bureau of Corrections Chief and after his predecessor, Gerald Bantag was relieved of his post.
But he emphasized the need for thorough examination through forensic anthropology to avoid drawing hasty conclusions.
While there have been reports of missing inmates for several years, solid evidence must align with the information to establish clear facts.
