Three Filipinos clinched two gold medals, and one silver, at the first International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) hosted by the Philippines at the New Clark City, Pampanga.
The event began on August 1 and concluded on August 6, where 55 students from 14 Asia-Pacific countries participated.
37 Olympians from the junior and senior high school divisions were awarded after the six-day event. The contestants who came as a team, competed as individuals, representing their respective countries. Ranking for each student was based on the points they obtained in the two exams.
Mohammad Nur Casib from the Philippine Science High School (PSHS)-Central Mindanao Campus obtained the highest theoretical and overall score, bagging a gold medal. He also earned the title of “Nuclear Ambassador”.
Neil Kyle Maniquis from Manila Science High School also secured a gold medal, while Jeremiah Auza from the PSHS-Central Visayas Campus, won a silver medal.
The competition consisted of two problems regarding the theoretical and experimental aspects of nuclear science.
The first INSO was organized by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI), with the Department of Education (DepEd) acting as co-organizer, along with the DOST-National Research Council of the Philippines and the Philippine Nuclear Science Foundation. Its primary objective is to showcase the country’s commitment to advancing nuclear education while fostering cooperation through the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology.
