At least three individuals perished while five others recuperate from injuries after a tree collapsed on Thursday, May 18, along the Estero De Manila in Binondo, Manila.
The Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office identified the fatalities as Edcel Landsiola, 42 years old; Jomar Portillo, 28 years old; and his two-year-old child, John Mark Portillo.
Manila City Mayor Honey Lacuna–Pangan said that the incident displaced around 40 families living in the area.
"Meron 15 pamilya na directly naapektuhan kasi sila yung totally wrecked yung kanilang mga tahanan," Lacuna-Pangan said during DZRH's Public Service Hour.
"Hindi na madadaanan ng ibang nakatira doon yung lugar. Parang in total, mga 40 families talaga ang temporarily ang i-house natin sa Delpan Evacuation Center," she added.
MDRRMO director Arnel Angeles said that investigators have yet to determine what caused the tree to collapse.
"Kasi balete nga siya, nakatubo siya mismo sa gilid ng pader at paghiga ng puno ay isinabay na niya yung pader," Angeles said.
