PNP imposes 3-day gun ban in NCR for SONA 2024
by Jim Fernandez19 July 2024

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Civil Security Group (CSG) announced on July 17 an extended gun ban in effect across the National Capital Region (NCR) as part of heightened security measures for President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s third State of the Nation Address (SONA).

The suspension of all permits to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR) spans three days, commencing on Saturday, July 22, and concluding at 12:01 AM on Tuesday, July 23.

The advisory emphasized that "this suspension is a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and security during the event."

PNP Spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo has confirmed ongoing efforts by the agency to finalize security protocols, primarily focused outside the Batasang Pambansa Complex, where the President will deliver his address. The House of Representatives Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms and the Presidential Security Group (PSG) will secure the chamber itself.

A deployment of no fewer than 22,000 policemen has been arranged for the occasion, including 6,000 stationed directly at the Batasang Pambansa Complex.

The SONA is an annual presidential report on the country's current state, the administration's agenda, and directives to Congress. Traditionally held on the last Monday of July, it serves as a critical national address.
