At least 275 personnel of the Bureau of Corrections are set to lose their jobs after failing to comply with the required eligibility and educational requirements under the law.

These BuCor personnel were allotted five years to obtain the minimum educational qualifications and eligibility from the date of the law’s effectiveness, which was passed in 2013.

According to Republic Act No. 10575 of the Bureau of Corrections Act of 2013, the professionalization and upgrading of standards in the appointments of its personnel are mandated, and the Civil Service Commission (CSC) will approve the qualification standards in 2018.

As such, the five-year deadline has already lapsed in 2023, with Department of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla extending its deadline to March 16, 2024, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originally, the BuCor noted that 421 personnel were supposedly affected; however, 41 of them filed for early retirement, with 105 completing the requirements needed.
