Two United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteurs will visit the Philippines to assess the country's human rights situation, the Commission of Human Rights (CHR) said Wednesday.

In a statement, CHR said Mama Fatima Singhateh, the UN Special Rapporteur on the sale and sexual exploitation of children including child prostitution and pornography, will visit on Nov. 28 to Dec. 8, 2022.

She would be looking into the measures the country has made to combat the sale and sexual exploitation of children, the commission said.

Meanwhile, UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of expression and opinion Irene Khan Khan is scheduled to visit in 2023.

During their visit, the two UN officials are also set to meet the national authorities, judiciary members, and other stakeholders including civil society organizations and human rights victims.

“We call on the national government to recognize the competence of special procedures mandate-holders by issuing a standing invitation to them to visit the country and conduct independent assessments of the human rights situation on the ground,” the CHR said.

It stressed that UN Special Rapporteurs have significant contributions to the international human rights protection mechanism, adding that they have proven to act with probity and constant regard to human rights principles and standards.

The CHR said the findings, conclusions, and recommendations that will be made by the two UN officials would serve as “competent, constructive, and specific advice” to the government on how to implement its human rights obligations.

On Monday, Nov. 14, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) examined the human rights records of the Philippines during the regular Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Some UN members gave their recommendations on necessary steps for the country to address several human rights issues.
