Authorities declared a fire out at the historical Manila Central Post Office on Tuesday after more than 30 hours since the blaze engulfed it on Sunday evening.

Based on the latest report from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) issued at 8 AM, a fire out was declared at 6:33 AM.

Eighteen individuals — one civilian and 12 firefighter personnel were injured.

According to the BFP, some sprained their ankle, sustained first-degree burns, and experienced headaches and chest pains.

Interviewed during DZRH Damdaming Bayan on Monday, BFP-National Captional Region (NCR) Chief Supt. Nahum Tarroza said they suspect that the fire began in the basement of the post office.

Tarroza said it took a while for the firefighter personnel to extinguish the fire as they encountered difficulty entering the building premises. He added that BFP personnel also had a shortage in water supply, forcing them to get water from the Pasig River.

Investigation on the cause of the fire is still underway, as of this writing.

Postmaster General Luis Carlos said earlier that all letters, parcels, and other documents inside the building were burned.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) also confirmed that some national identification cards (IDs) were also among the items burned by the fire.

The fire in the post office started at 11:30 pm on Sunday, May 21.

BFP raised the fire to General Alarm, the highest alarm level on Monday morning. The fire was declared under control at about 7:22 am.
