Oceana Philippines questioned the suggestion made by a professor to control the oil spill in Oriental Mindoro.

Dr. Irene Rodriguez, an associate professor at the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute, earlier proposed the practice of in-situ burning or the controlled burning of the oil.

"Wouldn't that add to the pollution," said Atty. Gloria Estenzo-Ramos, vice-president of Oceana Philippines, on Wednesday, March 15, during DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.

Rodriguez admitted that the practice might violate Republic Act 8749, also known as the Philippine Clean Air Act,

The waters of MIMAROPA and Western Visayas regions suffered from an oil spill after M/T Princess Empress, which carried 800,000 liters of industrial oil, sank on February 28 near the coast of Naujan, Oriental Mindoro.
