Some jeepney drivers ignored the transport strike of the group Malayang Alyansa ng Bus Employees at Laborers (MANIBELA) on Monday, October 16, and continued to ply their routes.
Walter Aninayon, a jeepney driver, stressed that he needs to continue working for his family.
"Wala naman mangyari kung kami ay magtigil pasada tayo. Magugutom kami. Isang araw lang ay wala ng makakain," Aninayon told DZRH.
Some jeepney drivers also distanced themselves from MANIBELA.
MANIBELA protests against the public utility vehicle modernization program, and the alleged corruption within the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.
Prior to the transport strike, the 'Magnificent Seven', a coalition of transport groups said that they would not join the protest.
The coalition includes Pasang Masda, Alliance of Transport Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines, Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Operator Nationwide, Alliance of Concerned Transport Organizations, Federation of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association of the Philippines, Stop and Go Transport Coalition, and Liga ng Transportasyon at Operators sa Pilipinas.
In response to the transport strike, some local government units announced a suspension of face-to-face classes and offered free rides for commuters.
