Two award-winning Filipino independent films are coming to Netflix this March.
The critically acclaimed 2017 Cinemelaya movie "Respeto" will be premiered on the streaming platform this coming Friday, March 3.
The film follows the story of a young wannabe rapper, portrayed by rapper-singer Abra, who formed an unexpected friendship with an elderly man who runs a bookstore.
"Respeto" also touched on the issues of extrajudicial killings (EJK) during the Duterte administration and the effects of martial law during the Marcos regime.
The movie, which was directed by Treb Monteras II, has bagged several awards at the 2017 Cinemalaya Film Festival.
It won best feature-length film, best editing, best cinematography, and best sound.
Meanwhile, Martika Ramirez Escobar’s "Leonor Never Die" will be shown on Netflix starting March 17.
The movie follows Leonor Reyers, a retired script writer who was behind the popular Pinoy action films during the 1980s.
After an unfortunate accident that sent her into a coma, she was transported inside the world of the unfinished screenplay that she wrote.
"Leonor Never Dies" took home the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award: Innovative Spirit in the 2022 Sundance Film Festival held last January 2022
It was the first Filipino film to compete in the said festival since 2006.
