A concert was performed at the Metropolitan Theater Manila on June 11 to mark the 125th anniversary of Philippine independence.
The "Mga Bunga ng Kalayaan" (Fruits of Freedom) concert featured musical performances, dances, poetry, and sketches directed and written by Floy Quintos, as well as a celebration of the country's journey toward freedom.
The event was a nostalgic look back at Filipinos' experiences during the colonial era.
It featured seasoned singers and theater figures such as Poppert Bernades, Esang de Torres, Arman Ferrer, Nonie Buencamino, Stella Caete-Mendoza, Audie Gemora, and Joel Lamangan.
Under the supervision of National Artist Ryan Cayabyab, the Ateneo Chamber Singers, the Philippine Harmonic Orchestra, and other musical groups performed on stage.
Also, the performance was free and available to anyone who was interested.
The National Commission for Culture and Arts, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, and the Metropolitan Theater arranged the Independence Day concert.
According to Emmanual Calairo, chairperson of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the performance also attempted to repackage historical storytelling.
According to Dr. Xiao Chua, a public historian in the Philippines, the show underlined the reality that the country was formed by the words, songs, and poems of the country's heroes.
