Hollywood star Ryan O’Neal, well-known for his roles in the Oscar-nominated film “Love Story,” passed away on Friday, Dec. 8, his son confirmed in an Instagram post.

“So this is the toughest thing I’ve ever had to say but here we go. My dad passed away peacefully today, with his loving team by his side supporting him and loving him as he would us,” Patrick O’Neal said.

Patrick shared that this father was his hero, having looked up to him since childhood.

“My father Ryan O’Neal has always been my hero. I looked up to him and he was always bigger than life,” he said.

“He is a Hollywood legend. Full stop. The growth spurt of the first name Ryan can be traced back to my dad. That’s a fact,” he added.

Ryan did not share the cause of death, but reports noted his diagnoses—chronic leukemia in 2001 and prostate cancer in 2012.

The Hollywood star also starred in the 1970s hit films "What's Up, Doc?" and "Paper Moon.”
