Senate Majority leader Juan Miguel Zubiri commended the recent elections held on May 9.
During his sponsorship speech before the Congress, as the National Board of Canvassers, proclaimed the next President and Vice President of the Philippines on Wednesday, May 25, Zubiri described the last elections as 'one of the most credible, orderly, and peaceful' in history.
"Don't just take it from me, this is reflected in the assessment of different media outfits, election watchdogs, and civil society organizations including the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting," Zubiri said.
Zubiri also called the elections 'historical' for having the highest voter turnout in Philippine history.
The lawmaker mentioned that more than 55 million people, or around 82 percent of registered voters, exercised their right to suffrage during the national and local elections.
The senator also pointed out that, for the first time since the ratification of the 1987 Constitution, the Philippines has elected a majority President and Vice President to lead the country.
"A phenomenon indeed in a multi-party system under a Presidential, Republican government," Zubiri said.
On Wednesday, the Congress proclaimed Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. as the next President of the Philippines after garnering 58.77 percent of the votes cast last May 9.
The Senate and the House of Representatives also proclaimed Davao City mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio as the next Vice President of the Philippines after 61.53 percent of the total votes.
Zubiri also praised the Congress for finishing the canvassing of votes for the President and Vice Presidential elections within two days, the fastest in the history of Philippine elections.
