After pummeling the country with strong winds and heavy rain, Typhoon Egay and the southwest monsoon killed at least 16 people and affected over one million people, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Sunday.
The severe hurricane and the strengthened southwest monsoon affected around 1,029,794 people from Luzon, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.
Over 30,000 individuals have fled their homes.
The NDRRMC further reported that the two weather disturbances killed 20 people and injured 52 others.
Meanwhile, the first infrastructure damage was estimated to be around P4.3 billion.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. declared on Saturday that families in Northern Luzon who were displaced by Egay will receive housing rehabilitation assistance as well as emergency help.
So far, the government has donated P64 million in aid to impacted residents.
Egay is the Philippines' fifth cyclone this year. Climate change, according to scientists, is exacerbating extreme weather occurrences such as violent storms.
As areas were struggling from the effects of Egay, a new cyclone, Severe Tropical Storm Falcon threatened further floods and landslides.
Despite the fact that Falcon will remain far from the Philippine mainland, it will continue to strengthen the southwest monsoon and bring rain.
