The Meralco power rates for the month of April will be slashed off at least one peso per kilowatt-hour due to lower generation and transmission charges, the power distributor announced Monday.
In a statement, Meralco said that it would reduce its power rates by PHP 0.9879, pulling down the overall electricity rate of a household to PHP 10.9518 per kilo-Watt hour (kWh) from last month’s PHP 11.9397 per kWh.
This means that the overall rate of a household consuming 200 kWh will have a decrease of PHP 198 of their total electricity bill.
"The substantial reduction in the overall electricity rate this month wiped out rate increases since January 2024, bringing the year-to-date adjustment to a net decrease of P0.3066 per kWh," Meralco said in a statement.
According to the electricity concessionaire, the significant decrease for the April billing period is caused by the decline. of generation charge by PHP 0.3613 per kWh due to lower costs from independent power producers and power supply agreements, offsetting higher Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) prices.
It attributed the price decrease to the reduction of the generation charge of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Power Supply Agreements (PSAs).
