Hannah Reyes Morales, a Filipina photographer and a New York Times contributor, is among the two finalists in the Feature Photography category of the 2024 Pulitzer Prizes.

Morales was selected for her "creative series of photographs documenting a 'youthquake' occurring in Africa, where, by 2050, the continent will account for one-quarter of the world's population and one-third of its young people."

She is up against fellow New York Times contributor Nanna Heitmann, who is nominated "for poignant photographs, chronicling unprecedented masses of migrants and their arduous journey north from Colombia to the border of the United States."

In an Instagram post, Morales recalled the time her editors conveyed the good news to her.

"On Sunday my editors called to let me know our work was named a Pulitzer Prize Finalist for Feature Photography. I’m still in a daze since that call, overwhelmed and grateful for the chance to have worked on this story, written by @declanwalsh," she wrote.

"Thank you to everyone we photographed - it was not the easiest assignment but those we photographed helped us understand, bit by bit, what it means to be young and reshaping Africa, and the world," she continued.

The Pulitzer Prizes are prestigious awards in journalism, literature, drama, and music composition, established by Joseph Pulitzer, a Hungarian-American journalist and newspaper publisher. They were first awarded in 1917 and are administered by Columbia University in New York City.
