At least 34 cases of heat-related illness and six deaths were recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) following the extreme heat being faced by the country.

This was based on DOH's event-based surveillance and response (ESR) system from January 1 to April 18, 2024.

According to the DOH, the causes of deaths are still under verification.

The reported cases came from Central Visayas, Ilocos Region, and Soccsksargen Region.

The highest number of heat-related illnesses remains at 513 in 2023.

On Sunday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said heat index in 11 areas have nationwide reached ”dangerous" level.

According to the state weather bureau, a heat index of 42°C to 51°C falls under the “danger” category and would likely cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, with the probability of heat stroke with continued heat or sun exposure.
